LEFFINGWELL.
John S. Leffingwell, late Co. D. 135th N.Y. Vols, died Sunday, September 23, 1900, at his home in the town of Gainesville, aged 72 years, 4 months, 27 days. He was born in Essex, N.Y, but has been a resident of Gainesville for sixty years. June 26th, 1850, he was married to Miss Huldah J. Knapp, who with four daughters survive him. They are: Mrs. Frances T. O. Powers, Mrs. Etta M. Burns, Mrs. Amy S. Shipman of Belvidere, N.Y, Mrs. Mary E. Lawson of Perry Center.
Soon after Mr. Leffingwell enlisted and was in service a son was born to them, who lived three months and whom the father never saw, his loyal wife bearing bravely with him this affliction in the loss of an only son.
He was wounded in the battle of Reseca, Georgia, May 15, 1864, and was deprived of further service in Sherman';s famous march to the sea, being left in the hospital among the wounded. As a result of the close of the war he was discharged at Nashville, Ten, May 23, 1865. His record is that of a brave and efficient soldier.
In his town he had been town clerk and the holder of various offices of trust. He was a prominent member of Gibbs Post at Warsaw.
The funeral was attended at 2 p.m. from the Gainesville M. E. Church September 26th, interment in Maple Grove Cemetery. He was borne to his final resting place by his comrades of the 136th N.Y.V, with a delegation from Gibbs and other G.A.R. Posts, Comrade Rev. C. G. Stevens, officiating."

"Gainesville...The death of John S. Leffingwell occurred on Sunday evening, September 22, 1900. He was born April 26, 1823, at Essex, Essex County, NY and would have reached his 73d year in April next. He came to Gainesville in 1840, and from that date, excepting the time he served in the army, his continued residence has been in this village. He was married to Huldah J. Knapp in 1850[.] Enlisted in Co D, 136th N Y V, was wounded at Resaca, Ga, and received his discharge at Nashville at the close of the war. Comrade Leffingwell has been a very active and enthusiastic member of the GAR for many years. All through a long and tedious illness he has always shown remarkable cheerfulness of disposition and a temperament that was full of consolation and interest in his fellow comrades and very loyal to the organization. He held the offices of Commander and Adjutant of the William B. Lawrence Post, No 301, Dep't New York. He was a member of the M E church at Gainesville. The funeral services were held in the church on Wednesday, September 26, at 2 o'clock. He leaves a widow and four daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Powers, Mrs. J. W. Shipman, Mrs. N. H. Burns and Mrs. Fred Powers. There are now living seventeen grand children and eleven great grand children."

Huldah J. Knapp died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. S. Lathrop, near Pike, Wednesday, August 17, 1910, at the age of 81 years. She was born in the town of Gainesville on August 27, 1829, and at the age of 16 joined the M. E. Church of this village.
She was united in marriage to John S. Leffingwell and to them were born five children. A son died in infancy; four daughters survive, Mrs. J. W. Shipman, Mrs. G. S. Lathrop both of Pike, Mrs. N. H. Burns of Rochester, Mrs. Lawrence Powers of Gainesville; 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held from the M. E. Church, Saturday, with Rev. W. M. Young. He preached from the text, II. Tim. 4:6-8, a scripture used for family funeral sermons for 2-3 generations. She was laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery, Gainesville."

Mrs. Huldah J. Leffingwell was born Aug 27, 1829, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Glen Lathrop, at Pike Aug. 17, 1910. The funeral was held at the M. E. Church, at this place on Saturday at one o'clock conducted by Rev. W. M. Young[.] Deceased was a lifelong residence of this village. Four children survive -- Mrs. Lawrence Powers of Gainesville, Mrs. William Shipman of Pike, Mrs. Nicholas Burns of Rochester and Mrs. Glen Lathrop of Pike, together with sixteen grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Among the relatives from out of town to attend the funeral were G. C. Lathrop and family, Wm. Shipman and wife, Wm. Baker and family, John Wallace and family, Seymour Russell and family of Pike; Nicholas Burns and family and Mrs[.] Percy Hubbel of Buffalo; H.B. McColl and family of Lamont; E A Powers and daughter and Geo bailey and family of Perry; Edward Reynolds of Silver Springs; [and] Alice Powers of Warsaw."

"Mrs. Mary Lathrop, 84, widow of the late Glenn S. Lathrop, passed away at the Cook Nursing Home in Lamont on Tuesday, April 3rd. She had been in ill health for a long time. She was born in Gainesville in 1867 and had spent most of her life in that vicinity. She is survived by two step-children, Adelbert Lathrop of East Koy and Mrs. Walter Wallace of Perry; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted in the Harmon Funeral Home this village, at 2 o'clock, Friday afternoon, the Rev. R. E. Strong, past or the Pike United Baptist church, officiated. Burial was in Gainesville cemetery."
