window dressing History of Rowley's Canned Vegetables

From time to time people see the brand names Rowley's Fancy Quality and Og-Na on vintage cans and can labels, that refer to "E.H. Rowley" and "Fabius, N.Y." These beautiful old embossed labels can be traced to the vegetable canning company owned by Edward Hibberd Rowley of Fabius, New York, who printed many beautiful canning labels circa the 1920s. Following are images that I compiled of some of these labels along with Edward's biography.

Why do some vegetable labels exist flat and unused? In summary, labels printed between 1920-1950s for cans and vegetable crates may have been ready for use, but crop damages due to freeze or drought would make it hard to know how many might be needed each season. Some of the labels located were stored in packing or canning houses and were found in the 1950s as old packing houses were torn down for the growing expansion of cities. If you happen to own one, for long term storage, mount and store your antique labels with acid-free materials. To retain their value, do not use glue nor tape, and use only photo albums that have archival plastic sleeves, also avoid hanging in bright sunlight and keep flat. Available in antique shops, sometimes auctioned on Ebay.
