L. and Emma K. Benton. Her early life was spent in Summitsville, NY. She was a graduate of Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY and earned a master's degree from Syracuse University. She did further studies in French and Italian at Syracuse University, Le Moyne College and Onondaga Community College. In her professional career, she taught school at Gilbertsville, PA and Laurens, NY before taking a permanent position at Grant Junior High in Syracuse where she taught for 32 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carl H. Skeele in 2001.
Her memberships included the National Honor Society, Pi Lambda Chapter of Beta Phi Mu (international library honor society), Delta Kappa Gamma International, National Wildlife Federation, Erwin First United Methodist Church, the National Education Association and the New York State Teachers' Association.
Surviving are her dear friend, Lucy Quaile; cousin, Barbara Holley DeFrancis of Florida; a stepdaughter and stepson; several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A calling hour will be Sunday, December 7 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Fairchild and Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Boulevard East, DeWitt, to be followed by a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at Erwin First United Methodist Church, 920 Euclid Avenue, Syracuse. Burial will be in the Skeele Memorial Park in Fabius Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Erwin First United Methodist Church in memory of Vivian E. Benton."
