Months of suffering ended Sunday at 1 pm, when Byron Gillete Mantle died at the home of his sister, Mrs. E. G. Adams, in The Winthrop, after an illness of nearly two years.
Mr. Mantle was a native of Jefferson county, having been born on his father's farm in the town of Watertown 59 years ago. His early life was spent on the farm and in commercial life in Watertown. About 30 years ago he went to San Francisco and engaged in the mercantile trade continuing there successfully until his health began to fail about two years ago. He was arranging his affairs to return East when the great earthquake occurred, and in the fire which followed both his business and his home were destroyed. As soon as possible Mr. and Mrs. Mantle came to his former home and here he spent the last months of his life.
His near relatives are his wife; His son, Sheldon Baker Mantle of New York; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Mantle of Watertown; four sisters, Mrs. E. G. Adams and Mrs. Charles E. Ayers of Watertown, Miss Chloe D. Mantle of Washington, D.C, and Mrs. Allen Blanchard of Ellisburg, and one brother, William W. Mantle of the town of Rodman."
