"William H. Mantle, a native and lifelong resident of the town of Watertown, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. E. Ayers, 17 William street, at 8:30 last evening, aged 83 years, 4 months and 20 days. Death was due to the infirmities incident to advanced years. Mr. Mantle enjoyed remarkably good health during his long life until about last Fall, when he began to fail and gradually weekened until his death.
Mr. Mantel was born in 1823. In early life he took up the pursuite of agriculture, which he followed until about a year ago, when he retired and came to Watertown and made his residence with his daughter in this city.
Mr. Mantle was held in high esteem by all who knew him, winning confidence and respect by honorable dealing and courteous treatment of all with whom he came in contact. In 1847 he was married to Pamelia Gillett, by whom he is survived, together with one son, W. W. Mantle of Rodman, and four daughters, Mrs. E.G. Adam and Mrs. C. E. Ayers of this city, Mrs. Allen C. Blanchard of Ellisborg and Miss Chloe D. Mantle of Washington, D.C. Two other children, R. Barne and Byron G. Mantle, are dead. The former, [t]once a prominent business man of this city, died 25 years ago, and the latter died in January of this year.
The funeral will be held from his late home Saturday at 1 p.m. Rev. M. H. Harris officiating. Burial will be made in Brookside."
