N29. Tully Times (NY), (newspaper) digital scans published on the internet at fultonhistory.com, 1955 Feb. 17, page 5. "Mrs. C. A. Hills
Cora Adelle Rowley Hills died in Syracuse, Jan. 29. She was born May 20, 1869 at Shackham, daughter of Franklin Rowley and Samantha Byer Rowley. Mrs. Hills is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her home, south of Fabius village was one of six still being occupied by descendents of the early pioneers who came to this county in the 1790's and cut the timer of the virgin forests for cabin homes. Thomas and Richard came from Denmark to England. Later they sailed on February, 1634 from England to America. Richard's grandson, Josiah [Osborne], settled in Lenox, Mass. John and Josiah, the first came to help open up central New York's forest primeval. Josiah [Osborne] found a plot he liked, so tied up three totem poles to mark his desired plot, then went back to Lenox to tell others. Later he built a log cabin on his chosen plot. In 1811, Josiah [Osborne] the second started in February with his wife Mehetable Judd their two year old daughter Keziah and three-week old son, Lyman, for the cabin in Fabius. Mrs. Hills was very fond about telling about her grandmother, Keziah Osborne who married Samuel Rowley and remembered that early trip. It took them three months to come from Lenox to Fabius. Somewhere in the Mohawk Valley the snow melted and the sleigh was no longer usable. So a blacksmith sawed off four disks from some logs, punched holes in the centers, improvised axles and sent them on. Mrs. Hills could talk for hours telling stories of her grandmother Keziah."
