11 N110. Livingston Republican (Howell, MI) (cemetery records) as contributed by the public for this person; published on the internet at http://www.findagrave.com/, Mar 1902. "The death of W. L. Knapp occurred at the family residence in Howell, Thursday morning, March 27th. Rev. J. S. Boyden, of Kalamazoo was called to attend the funeral Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock. He was assisted by Rev. J. J. Crosby, pastor of the Baptist Church. The members of the Waddell Post G. A. R, of which society Mr. Knapp was an honored member, attended and marched to the cemetery as an escort. The business places of Howell closed from 11:00 to 12:00 during the funeral, out of respect for Mr. Knapp as a business man of many years standing. The floral offering were unusually fine, the casket being a mound of flowers.
Mr. Knapp has been in poor health for a year or more and his death was not entirely unexpected by members of the family. In the death of Mr. Knapp, the community loses one of the early pioneer and a representative business man. He was a man of tender heart, but had strong likes and dislikes. His personality was unusually striking.
William L. Knapp was born at Warsaw, N.Y, Sept. 24, 1817, and was therefore 84 years, 6 months, and four days old at the time of his death. He grew to manhood in the state of New York and served as Lieutenant in Co. H, 9th New York Cavalry in the War of the Rebellion. In 1864 he came to Michigan, residing at Dexter for a year. From Dexter, the family came to Howell in 1865. He was a blacksmith by trade and built wagon and blacksmith shops in Howell.
The firm name was W. L. Knapp & Son, Theodore B. Knapp being associated with his father. The firm carried on an extensive business in the manufacture of carriages, wagons, carts, cutters, etc. It has continued in business under the same name some 37 years until the present time. T. B. Knapp now being at the head of the firm.
Mr. Knapp was particularly fortunate in his home life. He was married to Miss Betsy Ann Brockway, of Warsaw, N.Y, May 15th, 1841. One son, Theodore B. Knapp was born to them. Betsy Ann Knapp died in April 1846. He was married the second time, Sept. 9th, 1847, the bride being Miss Elizabeth R. Green, of Portage, Wyoming County, N.Y. The widow and four children survive him. Mrs. Florence K. Rumsey, of Detroit, William R. Knapp, of Howell, Judson W. Knapp, of Jackson, Alva W. Knapp, of Detroit. Mrs. Elizabeth R, wife of C. A. Goodnow, died at Howell, Jan. 5th, 1893. Five years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Knapp celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedded life. In addition to four living children, there are ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Surely the lines have fallen to Mr. and Mrs. Knapp in pleasant places. Mr. Knapp was one of a family of ten children. One brother, James A. Knapp, of Marion, Ohio, survives him and was present at the funeral.
Wm. L. Knapp was for many years an officer in the Baptist Church, a member of Waddell Post. G. A. R, and prominent Mason."
