"Wm. H. Clarke, a native of this town, died at his home in Clinton Monday as a result of a stroke of apoplexy which he sustained early that morning. Mr. Clarke was aged about 71 years and was the son of Elijah Clarke who was one of the pioneer farmers of our town and fifty years ago one of its most extensive land owners. Mr. Clarke was very well known here and enjoyed the friendship of many. He spent his younger days here marrying Miss Lorene Babcock a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Babcock who had a numerous family of children a number of whom are now living among them Osmer J. Babcock of this village and Mrs. James Rogers of Leonardsville. One son, Bert, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarke, who died in early youth about forty years ago. Mr. Clarke was engaged in farming here and at one time conducted a store. He, with his wife, moved to Clinton soon after the death of their son. For 20 years he owned and conducted a hotel at Franklin Springs. He was a lover of good horses and he rarely ever failed to appear in the show ring at the Brookfield fair. Mr. and Mrs. Clarke had until late years visited Brookfield frequently and had never lost their interest in the town and its people. The deceased is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Davis of Dallas, Texas. The funeral service will be held at the home in Clinton tomorrow and burial will be in the cemetery here."
