Fred Eugene Preston, a farmer, 62 years old, who owned the George Lord farm on Brake Hill, committed suicide by shooting himself yesterday morning in some woods not far from the farm house. It is supposed the deed was committed while in a fit of despondency.
Mr. Preston lived in the farm house with a house keeper, Mrs. Pitteling(sp?), and a daughter, about 16 years old, a hired man, Irving Parker, of Cinncinatus, and another young man about 18 years old. Preston was heard to leave the house about 5 o'clock in the morning, but no one so far as is known, saw him. When he did not appear for the morning chores, search was made for him by the members of his household and others, and shortly before noon his body was found in a piece of woods about an eight of a mild from the house. Chief of police William Harwood, of this village was called, and he first went near the body. He found that the deed had been done, with an old muzzle loading single barrel shot gun...
Mr. Preston's wife died about a year ago, and he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles Selover, of Tully; by one sister, Mrs. Daniel Burns, of Truxton, and by one brother, Oriel Preston, of Truxton.
Little was known of Mr. Preston here. It is said he seemed in good spirits the night before, and had been playing cards at his home.
The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Selover, in Tully, Burial will be made in Fabius."
