Obituary
Galen E. Neal, 89, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the Shell Rock Care Center of natural causes.
Galen was born on November 11, 1918, at the Waverly Hospital in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Bessie (Abel) Neal. Galen attended school in Shell Rock, graduating from the Shell Rock High School in 1936. Galen then attended Wartburg College in Waverly for 1 year, University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls for 1 year and Cornell College in Mt.Vernon, Iowa, for 1 year. Galen then returned to the Shell Rock area and on September 12, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lois M. Bearse in Missouri. Following their marriage the couple made their home in rural Shell Rock, where Galen and Lois began farming. Galen farmed for 30 years and in 1976, the couple moved into Shell Rock, where Galen went to work for the Butler County Mutual Insurance Company. Galen worked for Butler County Mutual for over 30 years, retiring in 1980.
Galen was a member of the Butler County Mutual Life Insurance Board for over 30 years and also on the Board for R.E.C. in Allison for 30 years. Galen enjoyed traveling with Lois, especially their trips to Arkansas, Missouri and Hawaii.
Galen in survived by his wife, Lois of Shell Rock, his three children, Carol (George) Soldwisch of Shell Rock, William "Bill" (Dianna) Neal of Hawaii and Betty Gamundoy of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren, Shelley, Cindy, Melinda, Trisha, Lindsey, Jennifer, Erin, Megan, Leah, Matthew and Alana and 12 great grandchildren. Galen was preceded in death by his parents; one son Robert Ray Neal; one brother, Donald Neal and one sister, Dorothy Murray.
There will be no public visitation or services as Galen's body has been cremated per his request. Memorial services and burial of Galen's remains will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to either the Shell Rock Health Care Center or the Cedar Valley Hospice. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock is assisting the family with arrangements.
