Freeport
Vernis M. Mickey "Mickey" Pike, 80, of Freeport died at 4:35 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 27, 2003) in Allegheny Valley Hospital, Harrison, following a lingering illness.
Born Jan. 30, 1923, in the Laneville area of Freeport, she was a lifelong resident of the community.
Before her marriage, Mrs. Pike was a mail clerk at the former Joseph S. Finch Distilleries, Schenley, Gilpin.
She was the last surviving member of the Mickey family who owned and operated the former Valley Mills, also known as Mickey's Mills, a local historic landmark in the Laneville area for more than 65 years.
Mrs. Pike was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Freeport.
She enjoyed taking care of her family.
Survivors include a son, William H. (Sharon) Pike of Virginia Beach, Va; two daughters, Darlene J. Pike and Mrs. Karen A. (John) McDermott, both at home; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Pike, in 1992; her parents, Mirl C. and Sarah E. Rowley Mickey; and a sister, Melvetta Shirey.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth St, Freeport. Funeral ceremonies will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the United Presbyterian Church of Freeport, with her pastor, the Rev. Bill Mumaw, officiating. Please meet at the church. Private burial will follow in Freeport Cemetery.
