7 "Two Boys, 14, Celebrators of 4th, Die from Lockjaw," (Syracuse) Syracuse Journal, 1929, Jul. 16, p. 3; "Powder Burns Cause Fatal Infection
Lockjaw, resulting from burns sustained while playing with a blank cartridge gun July 4, this morning claimed the life of Frankie Edward Mantell, 14, of Chittenango.
The boy died in the Hospital of the Good Shepherd this morning, only a few hours after he had been taken there from his home.
Frankie had celebrated the Fourth of July with a blank cartridge gun in some unknown manner he had been burned by a cartridge wadding and he was placed under the care of Dr. J. D. Boyd, Chittenango physician.
Although several injections of anti-tetanus serum had been administered during the past 10 days, the boy's condition steadily became worse.
At 6 o'clock last night lockjaw had definitely developed and the boy was brought to the hospital.
Efforts by physicians to stop the source of the malady were futile. He died shortly after 3 o'clock this morning a belated victim of the Independence Day celebration.
The victim was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Mantell of Chittenango and was a student in the high school of that village. He resided with his sister, Mrs. Mary L. Bettinger, in Chittenango.
Besides Mrs. Bettinger, he is survived by two other sisters, Mrs. Bertha Robins and Miss Grace Mantell, and five brothers, Harold, Bert, George, Ralph and Gerald.
The body was removed from the hospital by Tyler & Son, undertakers, and was taken back to Chittenango for funeral services.
Services will be conducted from the home of his sister, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Ralph Wyrick, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery."

The boy was injured when a blank cartridge exploded in the palm of his left hand. He was treated for his injury and given anti-tetanus serum and everything was done to aid him, but infection developed to such an extant that death resulted.
Frank Mantell was born August 28, 1915, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. George Mantell, both deceased. He was a first-year student in Chittenango High School. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Benjamin Robbins, Mrs. Brown Bettinger and Miss Grace Mantell and five brothers, Harold, Burt, George, Ralph and Gerald, all of Chittenango. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of his sister, Mrs. Brown Bettinger, and at 2:30 from the Methodist Church, with Rev. Ralph Wyrick officiating.
