(Editor's Note: Walter C. Knapp, prominent Fabius resident and well known for his lifetime interest in the schools of the area, succumbed last week. The following is a tribute to him as it appeared in the weekly newsletter of the Fabius Central school system. It expresses well the high esteem in which Mr. Knapp was held.)
"Walter", as he was known to his many friends, died Friday morning, March 18, just before his eighty-first birthday. His loss is deeply felt not only by his family, but by the community, the school, and the Fabius Baptist Church.
In 1915 he succeeded his father as trustee of the Fabius Union Free School his father had served as a trustee of the school for twenty-three years and Walter served continuously as a trustee or member of the Board of Education until he retired in 1961. He leaves an enviable record - Board member for forty-six years - President of the Board for thirty-one years
On his retirement from the Board of Education in 1961 he was honored at the Annual School District meeting and presented with a bound volume of letters from his friends and associates. We know of no better time than to quote from a few of those letters."
"You have been a father to the board, older and wiser, letting the newer members argue the problems, then drawing your wisdom from long experience, you would, guide the board to acceptable solutions...Mr. Knapp guided the local school through a period of one hundred pupils, four teachers, four classrooms and a budget of $3,000 in 1915- the depression years where the Board and Mr. Knapp went out and encouraged nonresidents to attend the school to boost State aid--- to the 1961 period where we were overcrowded..."
