Keely Rite to be Today in New York:
Huntington, N.Y. -- Service will be here today for Josiah Keely, 91, former president of what is now West Virginia Institute of Technology and former coal mining executive, who died Friday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Younghill Kang, in Huntington.
A native of Charleston, he was the oldest graduate of Charleston High School from which he was graduated in 1892.
At West Virginia University he was an outstanding football player, graduated in 1896. He received a master's degree from Harvard University.
He taught at Fern Bank School, then went to Montgomery Preparatory School (now West Virginia Tech) as principal.
He later became interested in West Virginia mining and took a correspondence course in that field. He went with the Fairmont coal interests and became superintendent of various mines in central West Virginia. He later became general manager of the Consolidated Coal Co. operating in Cabin Creek. The Keelys lived at Kayford for a number of years and were active in community affairs. He was known for his role in the rehabilitation work in the wake of the disastrous 1916 flood.
He was one of the best known authorities on birds in the state and wrote numerous articles for wild life magazines. After retirement, he and his wife, Ruby, traveled extensively in the country, continuing their nature study. Their latter years were spent in Huntington, N.Y. Mrs. Keely died in 1964.
Other survivors include brother, John S, of Silver Springs, Md; sisters Miss Urania B. Keely and Mrs. G. Callie Porter, both of Charleston."
"Service and interment were held yesterday in Huntington, N.Y, for Mrs. Ruby Ray Knight Keely, 90-year-old former resident of Kanawha County.
Mrs. Keely died Monday after suffering a heart attack at her New York home.
She was a native of Mason County, a graduate of Marshall College and a former teacher of Montgomery Preparatory School, now West Virginia Tech. She later lived at Kayford where her husband was general manager of a coal company.
Mrs. Keely and her husband moved to Huntington upon his retirement several years ago.
Surviving: husband, Josiah, daughter, Mrs. Younghill Kang of Huntington, N.Y; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren."
