Mantle, 99, of Mill Street, Harrisville, died on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility in Lowville. He was born on July 8, 1912 in Harrisville to LeRoy and Jennie Mullen Mantle. He enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII and served from 1942-1945. Verne retired in 1977 from St. Joe's Minerals after 26 years of dedicated service. Verne was well-known for his vegetable garden. He gardened every year into his 90s. Verne was predeceased by his wife, Betty in 2007; two sisters, Leone and Helen, and six brothers, Hilton, Lawrence, Wayne, Orren, Ralph and Roy. He is survived by one son, Brian of Harrisville; and four daughters, Susan Vincent, Liverpool, Nancy and Chris Dolce, Mattydale, Debra Miller, Rhode Island, Dawn and Ernest Fahsel, Liverpool; eight grandchildren, Lukas, Ashley, Nicole, CJ, Kayleigh, Trey, Taylor, and Connor; two sisters, Geraldine Squires, Rome and Marie Mantle, Lowville; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Harrisville. A funeral service will be held with the Rev. Frances Hemstreet, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Harrisville Cemetery.
