Frank B. Mantell (1888 - 1912)
"Young Farmer Suffocated in Snow Drift
Frank Mantel, 24; Meets Strange Death at Noon Near Kirkville.
—
Blown off the Towpath.
Wind Hurl Driver, Team and Sleigh into Bed of Canal.
Victim Pinned Down.
Discovered Two Hours Later by French Searching for Hat — Gate Aid from Village, but Their Work is Too Late.
— Frank Mantel, 34, a Madison county farmhand, lost his life in the bed of the Erie Canal, near Kirkville, at noon yesterday, in what doubtless was one of the storm accidents on record [in] Onondaga county.
Driving home along the towpath, [while] wind was blowing at a 40-mile velocity and a blinding snow was beating down upon the open countryside with a vengeance, Mantel's bob-sleigh, horses and all, was blown into the canal bed, and the young man, with the equipage upon top of him, was suffocated in the snow.
Death in two forms leered at Mantel before he yielded. Upon one side he faced being frozen to death. On the other he faced suffocation. His body embedded firmly in the snow bank and with the weight of the sleigh holding him down, there was no escape for the young man, and eventually he gave up. Suffocation claimed him, but his body was badly frozen long before the last spark of life went out. Realized His Fate.
For perhaps half an hour before he died, physicians say, Mantel probably realized his fate.
The scene of the fatality is ten miles east of Syracuse. Mr. Mantel, who had been employed on the R. G. Collis farm, between Kirkville and Chittenando, was driving back to the farm after a trip to Mycenae, and on the way home he stopped at Kirkville to warm himself... No One Saw Accident
No one was in the neighborhood at the time, and Mantel slowly suffocated. An hour later, Gus French, employed at the Green Lake Farm, who was driving to Kirkville, happened to pass a[l]ong this towpath...
Mantel, with his father, John Mantel and three brothers, George, Earl and William Mantel, worked on the same farm....
A few hours after the tragedy, the two horses were taken from the canal, unharmed..."

Byer Franklin Rowley (1879 - 1935)
"Fabius Man is Killed By Bolt of Lightning:
Two members of an Onondaga highway department construction gang were struck by lightning as they stood under a tree bordering the Eager Road, which leads from Jamesville to Onativia, during an electric storm early yesterday afternoon.
Byer F. Rowley, 56, of the town of Fabius, was killed instantly.
George Spillett of Jordan, who was standing within two feet of Rowley, was stunned, but revived shortly afterward.
All of the men sought shelter when the storm struck. The majority of them sat on the porch of the Fisher farmhouse nearby. Rowley, carrying his shovel, went to a large maple tree across the road where his boots were hanging from a lower limb.
He noticed that Spillett was standing under another tree a short distance up the road. "Come on down under this one, George." Rowley called, "the rain is not coming thru."
Spillet ran to the shelter of the tree where Rowley stood. As he reached the victim's side the bolt struck. Rowley was leaning on his shovel, its steel point in the ground. He reached up for his boots, hanging from the limb, and was thrown to the ground as the charge grounded thru his body and shovel. Spillet was hurled aside.
Others Run to Aid
Others members of the gang ran to the spot. Rowley was placed in an automobile and taken to General Hospital of Syracuse where a physician pronounced him dead. ...Rowley and Spillet had been working for the highway department since July 1 and drew their first paychecks Thursday. 'It was Rowley's first check and his last,' Spillet said. "But I guess I'll live to draw another one."
The victim bought an old automobile last week and parked it on the Floyd Cutter Farm — a few hundred yards from the tree under which he was killed. He had slept in the car a few nights, workman said, and had planned to pitch a tent on the Cutter farm and stay there so he would not have to drive the long distance from his home, near Pompey Center, to the job twice a day.
Rowley, who was a cousin of Supervisor, Bernard A. Rowley of Fabius, is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Eunice Foster of Fabius, Mrs. Erma Jensen of Truxton, Mrs. Emily Jensen of Pompey Center and Miss Esther Rowley of Fabius, and 10 grandchildren..."
