Mr. Baker was one of the best known farmers in the country.... He was beloved by those who knew him best, and what more can be said in praise of any man?

"S.R. Cleveland Dies Suddenly

Prominent Contractor Victim of Acute Indigestion

ILL ONLY SEVERAL HOURS

Was native of East Hounsfield and after graduating from high school here worked with his brothers — Performed some of greatest engineering feats of time.

Funeral services for Stephen R. Cleveland of 261 Ten Eyck street, who died very suddenly about 12:30 Sunday morning, will be held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 3. Rev Harry Westbrook Reed, D.D., pastor of the All Soul's Universalist church of which Mr. Cleveland was a prominent member, will officiate. A detail of Knights Templar will act as escort, and the Knights Template service will be performed at the grave. Burial will be made at Brookside cemetery.
Mr. Cleveland died very early Sunday morning following an illness of only a few hours. Death was due to an attack of acute indigestion, an attack of which he suffered about 6:30 Saturday night. While Mr. Cleveland has been in failing health for the past year, having suffered from stomach trouble, his condition had not been such as to prevent his being about....
Stephen R. Cleveland was born in East Hounsfield May 29, 1854. He was the son of Philander B. and Mary Ann Richardson Cleveland. The early year's of Mr. Cleveland's life were spent in his native town, and his early education was obtained there. Upon completing his courses in the district schools, Mr. Cleveland entered the Watertown High school, from which he graduated. For a short time he taught in a district school.
He became employed by the late Frank A. Hinds, on the engineering corps of the then Carthage, Watertown and Sackets Harbor railroad. Later he entered the employ of his brother, Merrit A. Cleveland.
On May 26, 1881, Mr. Cleveland married Emma C. Baker. Mrs. Cleveland was born in this city, the daughter of E. Collins and Sarah Barlow Baker. Her family, as that of Mr. Cleveland's, occupies a place of honor in the history of the country, her great-grandfather having taken a part in the war of 1812, Mrs. Cleveland is a member of the Daughters of the American revolution.
At the time Mr. Cleveland became associated with his brother, the latter was a member of the firm of Hunter, Murray and Cleveland... When Stephen Cleveland became an employee of the firm, the Welland Canal was being enlarged by the firm. He was given a position of paymaster ... remaining there until completion of the contract, a period of about five years.
Mr. Cleveland then went on to Ohio, where the firm was constructing the Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Toledo railroad and where he acted as paymaster for 13 months and at the expiration of that period he returned to the Wellend Canal...
He also worked on the construction of several sections of the old Lake Ontario Shore railroad, now a part of the New York Central lines, and also on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. From 1889 to 1896, he was employed on the construction of the Golloups canal for the Canadian government and the North Channel on the St. Lawrence river.
The construction of the North Channel by the firm was considered one of the greatest engineering feats of that day. About 80 acres of the St. Lawrence river was dammed and drained. ...
In 1884, Mr. Cleveland returned to this city and purchased land in Ten Eyck street, where he built a beautiful home. For many years, Mr. Cleveland resided there only during the winters and lived at Prescott, Ont., during the summer seasons.
Mr. Cleveland was for many years one of the most prominent members of the All Souls' Universalist Church. He constructed the present structure on Washington street... He was chairman of the building committee at the time. He always pointed with price to the church which is one of the most beautiful and most costly in the city...
Mr. Cleveland was president and acting head of the Watertown National bank for several years. He was president of the Eager Electric company from its formation until about 1915, when he resigned. He was also a director of the Northern New York Trust company and a trustee of the Jefferson County Savings bank...
At the time of his death, Mr. Cleveland was a member of the board of trustees of the City hospital. He served as a president of that board for several successive years.
Mr. Cleveland was a great believer and ardent admirer of thoroughbred cattle. He was the owner of the Kemaah farm on the Watertown-Sackets harbour road, where he raised large herds of cattle. The farm has become famous throughout the state for its products. He was a member and a past master of McNabb lodge. F. and A.M., chapter No. 59, Royal Arch Mastons; Commandary, No. 11, Knights Templar, and a member of the lodge of Perfection and a Scottish Rite Mason.
