Bethiah (Mantle) Miles (1817 - 1885)
"Mrs. Fabius Miles died suddenly last Thursday afternoon, May 7, 1885. She worked in the forenoon, and at dinner time was apparently as well as usual. Soon after she went across the river some thirty rods from the house, to look after some cattle that were grazing, when some one at the house heard her call and on looking that way saw her throw up her hands and fall. Those near hurried to the place, took her up, carried her to the house and did all in their power to restore her to consciousness, but it was too late, as death had struck the fatal blow and her spirit had passed beyond the river. Miss Bethiah Mantle was born in Jefferson county, N, Y., in July, 1817, where she passed her youthful days. In 1839 she married Mr. Miles at Watertown. They lived there until 1844, when they moved to this township and settled on the place where she spent the remainder of her days. Here she passed forty-one years of earnest, faithful labor and general usefulness, gaining the respect and esteem of all who became acquainted with her.
"During this time she was called to mourn the death of two sons and two daughters. While they have gone before, a husband and two daughters are left to mourn her loss and follow after. The funeral, which was at the house on Saturday, was largely attended, many of the old settlers being present who sadly mourned the loss of one taken so suddenly from their already wellthinned ranks. She had obeyed the call for which they are 'only waiting.'"

Lydia May Miles (1859 - 1925)
"Mrs. Lydia M. Klock: Lydia May Miles, the youngest daughter of Fabius and Bethial Miles, was born in Hartford, Michigan, on May 27, 1859 and after an illness of about two weeks passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Minshall, on August 26, 1925, aged 66 years and three months.
In August, 1876, she was married to J. M. Worthington and moved to South Haven and later to East Jordan. To this union were born six children, two of whom survive, Mrs. Mabel Minshall of Hartford and Mrs. Florine Groner of Parma. The other daughters preceded her in death, Mrs. Bessie Sheldon in 1922, Marion Worthington in 1898, Mrs. Vannie Chapman in 1904 and Maggie Worthington in 1900.
In 1885 Mr. Worthington passed away in East Jordan and the family returned to the old Miles homestead northeast of Hartford.
In 1912 she married Henry Klock and assumed the responsibility of mothering his two small children, Esther and Edward Klock. Mr. Klock passed away on March 30 of this year.
With the exception of a few years in the south and east, she had spent her entire life in the vicinity of Hartford. In 1912, while a resident of Ethridge, Tenn., she united with the M. E. church (South).
She was a loving and devoted mother, friend and neighbor, whose Christianity was of the heart and not of the lips. The testimony of her children and friends bears witness to a life of self-sacrificing love and service.
Those left to mourn her departure besides her children are: Two nieces, Mrs. Isabelle Boyer of Evanston, Ill., and Mrs. Clyde Smith of Bangor; four nephews, Harrison Balfour of Watervliet and Grover, Leland, and Arthur Balfour of Bangor, three grandchildren Margaret and Marshall Minshall and Ruth Louise Groner, and a large group of neighbors and friends to whom her fine character and pleasing personality had endeared her.
Thus closes a life, which in the words of a relative, was summed up as one full of courage, optimism, and good works.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minshall on Friday, August 28, Rev. J. H. Balfour officiating with interment at Maple Hill. Many relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects to her memory, and floral offerings of the loveliest testified abundantly to the esteem in which she was held. Music was contributed by Carleton and Carson Minshall of Dowagiac, with Mrs. Carleton Minshall as accompanist. "
