Luther Savery (1838 - 1903)
"FUNERAL OF COLONEL SEVERY
The fneral (sic) of Luther Severy was held Friday at 10 o'clock a. m., at the home on Tenth avenue and Merchant street. The services were in charge of Rev. Frank Ward and the Emporia lodge of Knights Templar. The choir of the First Congregational church, Mrs. Chas. Harris, Miss Achsah Harris, and Messrs. O'Neil and Whitehead sang two selections, "Asleep in Jesus" and "Abide With Me." The floral decorations in the room in which the body lay were especially beautiful. A body of Knights Templar headed by the Second Regiment band escorted the body to Maplewood. The pallbearers were Colonel Steele, F. C. Newman, G. W. Newman, Wm. Martindale, J. J. Edwards and L. W. Lewis. A large number of townsmen were present to pay their last respects to this man who has done so much in the upbuilding of this town."
"Another Pioneer Gone. Orsemus Douglass died at his home 627 Merchant Street, Sunday morning at 9 o'clock.
Mr. Douglas was born in Rutland, Vt., June 14, 1818. He was married to Miss Ann Jennet Galway in Centerville, Mich., Feb. 18, 1840. His early youth was spent in Vermont, after which he moved to New York, and after living in that state for a few years, he moved to Michigan. In the fall of 1869 he came to Kansas, in company with his brother William, Luther Severy and others. He was a contractor by trade and was the superintendent in charge of the brick work on the Jay building and many others of the older business houses along Commercial street. He leaves four children: Harry Douglass and Mrs. Emily Armor of this city. James Douglass of Pawnee Rock, Kan., and Mrs. Alice Hunt of Renfro, Okla. Mrs. Hunt was here at the time of her father's death, and Mrs. James Douglass is expected here tonight.
The funeral services were held from the house Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock and the remains were interred in Maplewood cemetery. Rev. Ramsburg of the Grace M.E. church delivered the funeral address."
