Heli Hibbard Rowley (1849 - 1889)

"SUICIDE AT FABIUS.
Hibbard Rowley's Body Found Hanging in His Barn.
Fabius, Mar. 28รข — The body of Hibbard Rowley was found hanging in a barn on his place about a mile from this village yesterday afternoon. Mr. Rowley left the house about 9 o'clock in the forenoon and was not again seen alive by any member of his family. His protracted absence began to alarm his wife and in consequence she sent one of her children to the house of Hiram Rowley, a relative who lived about a mile distant. Hiram returned with the messenger and, without a suspicion of what he was to find, entered the barn and discovered the dead body of Mr. Rowley suspended by the neck. The body was at once removed to the house and the coroner notified. Am inquest was held on Thursday which resulted in finding that Mr. Rowley hanged himself during a temporary fit of insanity.
The sad ending of Mr. Rowley's life was a surprise to all as he was nicely situating, being located on a farm of upwards of 300 acres, and enjoying the pleasantest of domestic relations with his family, which consisted of a wife and six children. of later, however, he has been inflicted with a kidney trouble and undoubtedly this was the direct cause of his becoming deranged temporarily, during which time he committed the deed. As a man of integrity he was foremost of this town and enjoyed the highest esteem of all. His age was 39 years. Funeral services are to be held at his later residence on Saturday at 10 o'clock."

John H. Rowley (1839 - 1902)

"Death of J. H. Rowley
John H. Rowley, who resides about three miles east of Tully village, in the town of Truxton, died very suddenly at his home on Tuesday last. Mr. Rowley appeared to be as well as usual on Tuesday. About 9 a.m. on that day he went to his barn to attend to some work. His sister, Mrs. Warren Negus, who was passing the bar at about 11:00 o'clock, saw the door open and stepped in. She was horrified to find her brother lying on the floor, apparently lifeless. She hastened to the house and informed Mrs. Rowley and her daughters, who at once dispatched a messenger for Dr. W.H. Dwinelle, of Tully, and for his son-in-law, Wm. McEvers, who resides a short distance from the home of Mr. Rowley.
Mr. Dwinelle found that Mr. Rowley had been dead several hours, he having apparently died suddenly. The cause of death was thought to be apoplexy.
The deceased was well known and respected. He owned a large farm in the northern part of the town of Truxton, on which he had lived for many years. He was an industrious man, a kind husband and father, a loyal citizen and obliging neighbor. He leaves, beside a wife, five children, one son, Grover, who resides at home, and four daughters, Mrs. Wm. McEvers, of Apulia; Miss Nora Rowley, of Syracuse; Miss Mable and Miss Olive Rowley, who reside at home.
The funeral took place on Thursday. Interment in Apulia cemetery."

Friday a second operation was deemed necessity to save his life. At first Mr. Rowley rallied finely but soon began to fail, dying at about 10 o'clock that night. The funeral was held at 2:30 Sunday from the home of his mother, where he died. The bereaved families have the sympathy of the entire community.

Cora Adelle Rowley Hills died in Syracuse, Jan. 29. She was born May 20, 1869 at Shackham, daughter of Franklin Rowley and Samantha Byer Rowley. Mrs. Hills is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her home, south of Fabius village was one of six still being occupied by descendents of the early pioneers who came to this county in the 1790's and cut the timer of the virgin forests for cabin homes. Thomas and Richard came from Denmark to England. Later they sailed on February, 1634 from England to America. Richard's grandson, Josiah [Osborne], settled in Lenox, Mass. John and Josiah, the first came to help open up central New York's forest primeval. Josiah [Osborne] found a plot he liked, so tied up three totem poles to mark his desired plot, then went back to Lenox to tell others. Later he built a log cabin on his chosen plot. In 1811, Josiah [Osborne] the second started in February with his wife Mehetable Judd their two year old daughter Keziah and three-week old son, Lyman, for the cabin in Fabius. Mrs. Hills was very fond about telling about her grandmother, Keziah Osborne who married Samuel Rowley and remembered that early trip. It took them three months to come from Lenox to Fabius. Somewhere in the Mohawk Valley the snow melted and the sleigh was no longer usable. So a blacksmith sawed off four disks from some logs, punched holes in the centers, improvised axles and sent them on. Mrs. Hills could talk for hours telling stories of her grandmother Keziah."
