Avery Atwood Austin (1911 - 1941)


"Rockford, Ia., Man is Killed, Vinton Coach Injured in Crash
Avery A. Austin, 29, of Rockford, Ia., son of Aubert Austin, 3045 Oakland road NE, died in St. Luke's hospital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, an hour after an automobile he was driving figured in a head-on collision 11 miles west of Cedar Rapids on the Lincoln highway. Austin suffered a skull fracture and neck injuruies.
The driver of the second car, Fred Cameron, 32, Vinton high school football coach, was brought to St. Luke's by the Ambulance Service. He suffered a fractured left hip, and was said to be in fairly good condition Saturday.
Both men were traveling alone. Cameron was en route to cedar Rapids, where he was to have refereed the Wilson-Waterloo East basketball game.
Austin, who was traveling west, apparently lost control of his machine....there was no witnesses...It was the first 1941 highway death in Benton county. The body was taken to the Turner Funeral home.
Avery Austin was telephone exchange manager at Rockford. He was born Nov. 15, 1911, at Spencer, IA, where he spent the greater part of his life. He was a member of the Congregational church and of the Masonic bodies at Rockford. He was also a scoutmaster at Rockford.
He received his education in the schools of Spencer and attended Drake University. He was married to Verneil Spangler who survives with one son, Robert Avery Austin of Rockford. Aubert R. Austin of Cedar Rapids, his mother, Mrs. Grace Blinkman of Spencer; a brother, Robert Aubert Austin of Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill, and his grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Lester L. Atwood of Spencer. The body was taken from the Turner mortuary to the Jones funeral home at Spencer for services and interment."

Vera L. (_) Austin (1891 - 1961)


"Mrs. Aubert Austin
Vera L. Austin, 74, of 1027 Tenth street NW, wife of Aubert Austin and a Cedar Rapids resident 19 years, died Wednesday after a long illness.
Born Dept. 14, 1891, in Ohio, she was married at Marion March 24, 1950.
Surviving are a husband; a son, Andrew J. Rector, jr., of York, Pa.; and a daughter, Roberta Kenny of Denver; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mrs. Austin was a member of St. James Methodist Church.
Memorial services: Turner chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. L. George Pimlott. Burial: Cedar memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel."

"METRO DEATHS
Aubert R. Austin, 94, a former resident of Cedar Rapids and Spencer, died Saturday at Davenport Osteopathic Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 22, 1889, at Spencer, he married Vera, who died in 1965. He attended the Methodist Church and was a member of Crescent Masonic Lodge No. 25 AF & AM.
He farmed for many years before moving to Cedar Rapids, where he worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and Collins Radio.
Surviving are one son, Roger Austin of Lake Wales, Fla.; two grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Private Masonic services will be held at the Crescent Masonic Lodge at a later date. Inurment: Mount Moriah section of Cedar Memorial park Cemetery. Arrangements by Turner Chapel East."
