Widely Known Rome Dentist Had Practiced Here for 40 Years

Dr. George E. Cheney, 85, who had been one of Rome's leading dentists for 40 years, died suddenly at his home, 40th N. James St., on Sunday. He was taken ill Friday.
Born in Lowell, Nov 3, 1850, he was the son of George Washington Law Cheney and Clarissa Philleo Cheney, early settlers in this section. He receive _s early education in district schools. Later he studied dentistry with Dr. A. S. Roberts, with whom he maintained offices for many years on the site of the present postoffice. Dr. Cheney retired in 1913.
On Feb. 27, 18__, he married Miss Eva Seelye of this city. A few years later the couple moved to Dix, where they remained until 1903, when they returned here. They have lived here ever since.
Dr. Cheney was a republican. He was affiliated with the First M.E. Church. Survivors include his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Fred W. Yutzler, this city, and Miss Ruth Cheney, at home; four grandchildren, Harriet and Nancy Cheney, Verona, and Roger and Aurie Yutzler, Rome."

"Mrs. Cheney Dies at 100 In Her Home
One of the area's oldest residents Mrs. Cheney had been ill since October and had been in failing health for more than a year.
Mrs. Cheney was born Feb. 4, 1855, in Bartlett, Town of Westmoreland, second daughter of Reuben and Abby Dunham Seelye. She had a brother and sister, and nine half-brothers and sisters by her father's first marriage.
Two of her half-brothers, Norman and Duane, fought in the Civil War, Duane was killed at 17 in the battle of Fredricksburg, and Norman was wounded in the same engagement.
Mrs. Cheney went to Vernon to live after the death of her mother in 1870. Her father had died when she was four. There she learned dressmaking and later came to Rome."
