"State 'Land King" Dies at Vincennes
~~~ William H. Brevoort Owned More than 9,000 Acres at Time of Death
~~~
VINCENNES, April 23. (Special.) — William H. Brevoort, aged 81 years, the largest land owner in the state and often referred to as "Indiana's land king" passed away today at his home in this city after a three days' illness.
Mr. Brevoort was born in Ohio and later went to Indianapolis with his father who was a prominent physician of that city. He attended the public school in Indianapolis and later entered Butler college, being a classmate of the late Addison C. Harris, United States attorney general under the administration of President Benjamin Harrison. Two years ago he attended a centennial given by Butler college which was also attended by Mr. Harris they being the only surviving members of their class.
When a young man he came to Knox county and purchased a small farm, acquiring more land until at the time of his death he owned more than 9,000 acres, most of which is located in this county. He spent a fortune in improving the land, which is valued on the average of $150 per acre. As a known cattle raiser, Mr. Brevoort was known throughout Indiana and adjoining states and never fed less than 1,000 head of fancy steers. He never made a shipment unless the stock was in "tip top" condition and his cattle always brought the best price.
Although married twice and being the father of five children, John M. Brevoort, a son, is the only surviving member of the family, and the sole heir to the estate which value at more than a million dollars. The funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon and will be in charge of Rev. Z. Sweeney of Columbus, Inc."
