Was Resident of City Since 1887 and Well-Known Masonic Writer; is Survived by His Mother.

Burton E. Bennett, 67 years old, pioneer Washington attorney and Masonic writer, died yesterday at his home, 6531 Sixth Ave. N.W. He was a member of the Pioneer's Association of the State of Washington and had lived in Seattle since 1887.
He was born in New York in 1863 and received his early education at Brookfield Academy. He entered Cornell University in 1881 and was graduated in 1885. Other institutions have conferred on him the degrees of Doctor of Science and Doctor of Civil Law. He was orator of his class, one of the Woodford orators, and a senior editor of the Cornell Daily Sun.
After his graduation from Cornell he read law with E.H. Lamb of Waterville, N.Y., and later with S.M. Lindsley of Utica, N.Y.. He was admitted to practice before the bar of the State of New York in 1887.
He was a third-degree Mason and recognized as an authority on Masonic history. He had taken an active part in Masonry for nearly half century, and at the time of his death was a member of Ionic Lodge No. 980, F. & A.M. of Seattle, to which he had belonged for more than thirty years. At one time he was editor of the Masonic Annual, the Masonic Semi-Annual and had served as executive on the editorial staff of the See America First Magazine. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Bennett, who resides at the family home."

"A.S. Alvord, Kent, Pioneer, Kills Self
Despondent over poor health, Albert S. Alvord, 54 years old, pioneer Kent resident; killed himself with a shotgun at his home early today.
Alvord got up to build a fire, according to information Deputy Coroner C.G. Chittenden received from Mrs. Alvord. About 5:30 o'clock, she said, she heard a shot and found her husband under a tree.
He was born on the old Alvord farm near Kent and had lived there all his life. He is survived by his wife, Cora, and a brother, I.F. Alvord, of Centralia."

"Coroner Starts Investigation of Woman's Death
Coroner Otto H. Mittlestadt said today an investigation by his office would be made in the death of Mrs. Lola Rowley, 28 years old, who was found dead last night in her gas-filled kitchen at 419 E. Thomas St.
Elmer Rowley her husband, found the body upon returning home. The woman was lying on the floor, a burned match near her hand. Gas was flowing from one stove jet. Coroner Mittelstadt said the case was one of accidental death, and that the woman possibly fainted while trying to light the burner, or was stricken with a heart attack.
Funeral arrangements will be made today at the Home Undertaking Company."

Mr. Bruce died Wednesday of a stroke at the home of a friend. He had suffered a minor stroke previously.
Mr. Bruce was born in Brookfield, Mo., He came here 29 years ago from Doty, Lewis County. He was a caretaker in the Baroness Apartment Hotel. He was a member of Local 6, a Building Service Employer's Union.
Surviving are his wife, Anna May; a son, Marvin Bruce, Seattle' a brother, Donald Bruce, Longview, Cowlitz County; a sister, Mrs. Oran Nichols, Davenport, Lincoln County, and three grandchildren."

Mrs. Cora Shagger Alvord, 82, of Kent, a former school teacher, died Wednesday in Kent.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow in the Edline chapel, Kent. Burial will be in Hillcrest.
Mrs. Alvord was born in Pennsylvania. She went to Nebraska as a child. The family moved to Kent in 1894. She taught there before her marriage to A.S. Alvord, a member of a pioneer family of the White River Valley.
Mrs. Alvord was a long-time member of the Kent Methodist Church and was active in civic affairs and in the Kent Orthopedic Guild.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Margaret S. Holland, Bremerton, Mrs. Mabel S. Griggs, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Gertrude S. Rowland, Walla Walla."

"Mrs. Edward B. Swart, Pioneer Resident, Dies
Mrs. Ella M. Swart, 94, a resident of Seattle for 71 years, died yesterday in the Kenny Home, where she lived 12 years. She had been ill a year.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 o'clock Monday in the University Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Evergreen, under direction of Adams Fornker Mortuary.
Mrs. Swart was the widow of Edward B. Swart, a machinery salesman, who died in 1947.
Mrs. Swart's father, the Rev. Rollin Smith, organized and was the first minister of the Kent Methodist Church. Mrs. Swart was a member of the Pioneer Daughters of Washington.
Born in Kent, Mrs. Swart moved to Seattle from Orillia in 1889.
Survivors are a son, Arthur H. Swart, Millbrae, Calif, and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy N. Bushnell, Olympia, and Margaret Smith, Portland, Ore."
