Leverette Wayne Persons (1871 - 1941)
"L. W. Persons Died Saturday
Prominent Citizen Succumbs at the age of 69 Leverette W. Persons, better known as "Cap," for many years a prominent resident of Sparta, died last Saturday afternoon at his home on East Main street, at the age of 69. Mr. Persons had been afflicted with severe asthma for some time which affected his heart.
Mr. Persons was the local manager of the American Tobacco Co. for many years. He was active in civic affairs and for many years was an efficient member of the city council from which position he retired only a few years ago. He was a captain in the Spanish-America war.
Mr. Persons was a prominent Mason and a masonic funeral service will be conducted for him Wednesday afternoon at 2:33 p.m. at the Sparta Temple. All Masons will attend the funeral in a body and will be in charge of the funeral. In his Masonic membership, Mr. Persons was also president of the Low Twelve Club.
Mr. Persons is survived by his wife and one daughter and also a step-daughter, who have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. A complete obituary will appear in a later issue."
