Barton Chandler Hilliard (1897 - 1964)


"Barton C. Hilliard
Manchester Depot — Barton Chandler Hilliard, 67, with the Railway Express for 48 years and its agent here since 1938, died Tuesday at his home in Manchester Depot.
A native of Peru, he was born June 17, 1897, a son of Allen and Fannie (Barton) Hilliard. His schooling had been received in the area. He went to Manchester in 1915 and was first employed by Standard Oil Co. In 1918 he became affiliated with Railway Express and was appointed agent 20 years later. For several years Mr. and Mrs. Hilliard had a catering service in Manchester-Dorset area.
Mr. Hilliard was a member of the Manchester Congregational Church and a past deacon. His Masonic connections included Adoniram Lodge F&AM; Adoniram RAM, Adoniram Order Eastern Star, Cairo Shrine of Rutland and Taft Commandery, Knights Templar, of Bennington. He was a committeeman of Troop 33 Boy Scouts of America and treasurer of the troop for many years.
Survivors are his wife, the former Fredrika Clement; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Matteson of Wallingford, Conn.; a son, Allen F. Hilliard of Manchester Depot; two sisters, Mrs. Christie Chadwick of Hollis, N.H., and Mrs. Louisa Desmond of Upton, Mass.; a brother, Harold Hilliard of Bennington, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held in the Manchester Congregational Church at 2 pm Thursday. The Rev. E.H. Nickerson, pastor, will officiate. Cremation will be at the Gardner Earl Crematory in Troy, N.Y.
There will be no visiting hours. Contributions may be made to the Cancer Fund."

Rollin Cassius Rowley (1895 - 1969)


"Rollin C. Rowley
LONDONERRY — Rollin C. Rowley, 74, World War I veteran, died Thursday in Rutland Hospital. He was born Aug. 26, 1895 in Crown Point, N.Y., son of Edwin and Martha (Mead) Rowley.
He was a member of the Londonderry Second Congregational Church and was a charter member ob Robert P. Shepherson American Legion Post 82 of Londonderry.
He also belonged to West River Lodge 57 F&AM, of Londonderry and was a post member of the Manchester IOOF, an honorary member of the Londonderry Associates and a member of the West River Rod and Gun Club.
Survivors include his wife, the former Louise Warner, whom he married in 1918 in South Londonerry; two sons, Howard Rowley and Rollin Rowley Jr., both of Londonderry; a brother, George Rowley of Londonderry; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Adams of Arlington, Mrs. Zetta Polcen of Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Gertrude Bates of Wadsworth, Ohio; six granddaughters, two grandsons, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Londonderry Second Congregational Church with the pastor, the Rev. Gary Wehrwein, officiating. Burial will be in Roverside Cemtery, Londonderry.
There will be no calling hours."

"GEORGE A. ROWLEY
George A. Rowley, 82, who owned and operated Rowley's Express Inc. in Londonderry from 1917 until his retirement several years ago, died Saturday at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend.
He was born Dec. 6, 1887 in Crown Point, N.Y., son of Edward and Martha (Mead) Rowley. He was a member of the Londonderry Congregational Church. He was also a 50-year member of the West River Lodge F&AM, a charter member of Victorian Star Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, of Londonderry, and a member of Rutland Lodge of Elks.
Survivors includes his wife, the former Louella Burt, whom he married Nov. 27, 1912 in South Londonderry; a son, Lawrence Rowley of Londonderry; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Adams of Arlington, Mrs. Zetta Polcen of Northfield, Ohio, and Mrs. Gertrude Bates of Wardsworth, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Londonderry Congregational Church with the Rev. Gary Webrwein, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Londonderry.
There will be no calling hours."
