"Shooting in Truxton - On Monday afternoon last, June 24th, an old man named Levi Rowley, in Truxton, while chopping in his woods, was shot by his nephew, Eugene Briggs, or "Ligo" as he was generally called. .. money is supposed to be at the bottom of it. Rowley has for years been living the life of a hermit, alone in squalor and self-denial in a small house, dressed in sheepskin clothing - but believed (perhaps from his very manner of living, as much as from any other cause) to be rich, with money hidden away or about his little house. He is only to own a small farm on which he lives. He has made a will since his injury, bequeathing his property to a sister living at the West. He states that he has heard Briggs and other relatives talking about his property. He claims that he has money buried, but refused to tell where it is, in hopes that he may live, which begins to be thought possible, although for several days it was thought he would die.
The would be murderer, Eugene Briggs, is some eighteen or nineteen years of age, and lives between Apulia and Truxton— is a country loader and bad character generally, who has before now been in the hands of the law..."
