Grace Adella (Rowley) Bush (1877 - 1914)

"Found Death of New City Reservoir
Body of Mrs. Claude Bush Discovered Floating in Stream This Morning.
HAD BEEN DESPONDENT.
Loss of Infant Plunged Unfortunate Woman into Condition of Melancholia.
Suffering from an acute attack of melancholia, Mrs. Claude C. Bush, 37, of 224 Gordon Av. sought and found death early this morning in the Woodland Reservoir. Her body was found lying face down, six fee from shore at 3:30 o'clock by George Wilcox, one of the gatemen.
The remains were brought to shore and carried into the gatehouse. Artificial respiration was tried, but life had been extinct for some time. Superintendent Holliday of the coroner's office was notified and he at once went to the scene. Upon investigation he announced the cause one of suicide, and as no autopsy was necessary, he gave permission to Cornell, Clemont & Wright undertakers to remove the body to her late home.
Mrs. Bush had been in poor health since last fall, following the death of an infant child. She had been under the constant care of a physician, but in spite of all that was done to make life pleasant for her, her recent bereavement worked upon her mind and she was continually brooding. S few months ago, Mr. Bush and his wife took an extended trip to the seashore as it was through the change would be beneficial.
.. she was again becoming despondent and every effort was made by Mr. Bush to comfort her. Mrs. Bush was never left alone...
Last night for the first time in weeks of an evening, Mr. Bush left his home, when he attended the banquet of the Chamber of Commerce...Mr. Bush returned about midnight and the couple retired shortly after.
Some time after that Mrs. Bush left her bed, and without arousing anyone in the house, slipped on a kimono and made her way to the street. Barefooted, she walked four blocks to the entrance of the reservoir, and in the still of the morning crept down the saucer shaped bank and plunged into the water...arrangements for the funeral have not been made."

"Two Boys, 14, Celebrators of 4th, Die from Lockjaw
Powder Burns Cause Fatal Infection

Lockjaw, resulting from burns sustained while playing with a blank cartridge gun July 4, this morning claimed the life of Frankie Edward Mantell, 14, of Chittenango.
The boy died in the Hospital of the Good Shepherd this morning, only a few hours after he had been taken there from his home.
Frankie had celebrated the Fourth of July with a blank cartridge gun in some unknown manner he had been burned by a cartridge wadding and he was placed under the care of Dr. J. D. Boyd, Chittenango physician.
Although several injections of anti-tetanus serum had been administered during the past 10 days, the boy's condition steadily became worse.
At 6 o'clock last night lockjaw had definitely developed and the boy was brought to the hospital.
Efforts by physicians to stop the source of the malady were futile. He died shortly after 3 o'clock this morning a belated victim of the Independence Day celebration.
