Jacob Stears (1828 - 1896)


"Jacob Stears Funeral.
The funeral of Jacob Stears was attended by a large concourse of people at his late home in the town of Watertown Thursday afternoon. A majority of the members of the board of supervisors and a number of present and former county officials attended, besides many others from this city and various parts of the county. Rev. D. L. R. Libby, pastor of the Universalist church, of this city, was the officiating clergyman. He delivered a deeply impressive address. The bearers were Chairman Joseph Atwell, of the board of supervisors, County Clerk Frank D. Pierce, ex-County Cleric Fred Waddingham, and Supervisor W. D. Arms. The interment was at Brookside.
The gathering included many of the people of the locality in which he resided, to whom he was always obliging and ever willing to serve in every way."

Charles Grandison Baldwin (1851 - 1901)


"OBITUARY
Charles G. Baldwin.
Charles G. Baldwin of this city, died suddenly at Alexandria Bay Saturday evening about 5 o'clock, aged 51 years.
Mr. Baldwin, who represented Mr. Smith, a Syracuse manufacturer, went to Alexandria Bay Saturday morning and while there was stricken with rheumatism of the heart.
Mr. Baldwin was well known throughout Northern New York, having traveled many years for the Watertown Times, of which corporation he was a stockholder. He was a prominent Mason and a member of Watertown lodge chapter, commandery and Media temple, Mystic Shrine. He was born in Stone Mills, N.Y. He leaves a widow, one son, E. C. Baldwin, the well known druggist of this city, and his father. The remains were brought from Alexandria Bay by vehicle, arriving here Sunday afternoon."

"Months of suffering ended Sunday at 1 pm, when Byron Gillete Mantle died at the home of his sister, Mrs. E. G. Adams, in The Winthrop, after an illness of nearly two years.
Mr. Mantle was a native of Jefferson county, having been born on his father's farm in the town of Watertown 59 years ago. His early life was spent on the farm and in commercial life in Watertown. About 30 years ago he went to San Francisco and engaged in the mercantile trade continuing there successfully until his health began to fail about two years ago. He was arranging his affairs to return East when the great earthquake occurred, and in the fire which followed both his business and his home were destroyed. As soon as possible Mr. and Mrs. Mantle came to his former home and here he spent the last months of his life.
His near relatives are his wife; His son, Sheldon Baker Mantle of New York; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Mantle of Watertown; four sisters, Mrs. E. G. Adams and Mrs. Charles E. Ayers of Watertown, Miss Chloe D. Mantle of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Allen Blanchard of Ellisburg, and one brother, William W. Mantle of the town of Rodman."

William Hill Mantle (1823 - 1907)


"William H. Mantle
William H. Mantle, an old and highly respected resident of Watertown who had passed the four score mark, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. C. A. Ayers, No. 17 William Street, about 8:30 Wednesday evening.
Mr. Mantle was born in the town of Watertown 88 years ago and lived his entire life in his native town. About one year ago failing health compelled him to leave his farm and he came to Watertown to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Ayers.
In 1847 he married Miss Pamelia Gillette of Watertown, who survives him. He also leaves five children, W.W. Mantle of Rodman, Mrs. E. G. Adams of this city, Mrs. Allen C. Blanchard of Ellisburg and Miss C. D. Mantle of Washington, D.C. Another son, Byron G. Mantle died about three months ago."

Charles Guilford Comstock (1851 - 1911)


"Charles G. Comstock
Charles G. Comstock, one of the city's best known and highly respected residents, died at 11:30 Monday morning at the City hospital, following a long period of ill health and an operation, aged 60 years.
Mr. Comstock was born in Evans Mills, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. William G. Comstock. He spent his boyhood in his native town and as a young man attended the Hungerford Collegiate Institute at Adams, there fitting himself for the profession of pharmacy. Completing his prepatory studies he accepted a position with the old drug firm of Camp & Massey in this city. Later he moved to Burlington, Vt., continuing in the drug business, and later, in the same business at Brandon, Vt. He then returned to Watertown...
Mr. Comstock was united in marriage to Miss Florence Bakers, who survives him, rogether with one sister, Mrs. Emma H. Simmons of Washington, D.C. and two brothers, W.M Comstock of Evans Mills and Clarence E. Comstock of this city."

Caroline W. Rockwell.
Caroline W. Rockwell, a life-long resident of this section, died Monday afternoon at her home in Watertown Centre at the age of 82 years. Mrs. Rockwell was born in Burrville, where practically all of her life was spent. She was well known throughout this section. She is survived by her husband and three nieces, Mrs. C. G. Comstock, Mrs. S.R. Cleveland, and Mrs. Olive Baldwin."

Depeauville, Jan. 26. — Fred C. Fox, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Fox, of Depeauville, died of pneumonia at his home in Florence, Colo., Jan. 14. He leaves a wife, Gratia, and two children, Edith and William, and many friends and relatives of this vicinity."

"James H. Fox.
Depauville, April 30. — James H. Fox, a well known retired farmer of this place and a veteran of the 10th New York Heavy Artillery, died at his home Sunday night, aged 81 years.
He is survived by his widow, three brothers, Byron of Depauville and Fred and Charles Fox of Watertown, and four children, James of Brownville, Mrs. Farr of St. Lawrence and Fannie and Lydia Fox of Washington, D.C."

Simeon Rockwell (1827 - 1913)


"Simeon Rockwell.
Simeon Rockwell, aged 86 years, a well known farmer of South Rutland, died early Tuesday morning following a long illness. Death was due to old age.
Mr. Rockwell was born in this county and went to Ireland when a young man. When the country was laid out into states he worked with the surveyors, later returning to this country. He was for some time located at Burrville, later going to Middle Road and about 40 years ago purchasing the farm on which he died.
He was married when a young man to Miss Caroline Barlow, who died about a year ago.
There survives no near relatives, although there are several nieces and nephews to the west."
