James Welsh Batch (1858 - 1896)


"JAMES BATCH
Died on Tuesday Evening at the Dayton Asylum.

Mr. James W. Batch, who was removed to the Dayton asylum last fall, and who has since been an inmate of that institution, died there on Wednesday morning.
Mr. Batch, some six or seven years since, had a paralytic stroke, and never recovered from the effects of it. His mind was greatly effected... He was the youngest son of a large family of children.
Mr. Batch leaves a wife and one child, and all will be glad to know that before the unfortunate stroke came, which robbed him of health and strength, he had in a measure made provision for their future comfort, by becoming a member of the Royal Arcanum. His insurance n that organization amounting to some $3,000 will be paid to his widow. Mrs. Herman K,. Horn, the undertaker, leaves for Dayton and will being the remains to Bellefontaine for burial. The time of the funeral has not yet been fixed. The funeral will be in charge of the Royal Arcanum."

"Hiram D. Truesdell, 90, a lifelong resident of Warsaw, died at his home west of this village Sunday. Mr. Truesdell was born in Warsaw on October 23, 1839 the son of John and Nancy Smith Truesdell, who were among the first settlers here. He leaves 3 sons, Barber C. Truesdell of Puyaliup, Wash., Walter Truesdell of Warsaw, and Fred Truesdell of East Randolph and 3 daughters Mrs. James Agar of New West minister, B.C. and Miss Edith Truesdell and Miss Ida Truesdell of Warsaw. Funeral services will be conducted from the family home tomorrow at 2 o'clock with burial in Warsaw Cemetery."

"Mrs Catherine Hahn of West Lake Shore road, wife of Charles Hahn, died at 9:00 last evening at the age of 83 years.
She is survived by her husband and six children. L.E. Hahn of Ceylon, Ohio, George Hahn and Mrs. Minnie Wangerine of Oberlin, Mrs. Martha Scharble of Elyria, Mrs. Bertha Schmitkons and Amelia Holstien of Amherst: fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One sister Mrs. Armina Garrett, and two brothers, James and Jacob Baumhardt of Wellington, also survive."

Lewis Edward Hahn (1871 - 1936)


"L. E. Hahn, prominent and well known Berlin township man died at his home north of town Sunday evening. Mr. Hahn had been in poor health for some time, but the announcement of his death came as a shock to his wide circle of friends, as he had been confined to the home but a few days. Lewis E Hahn, the son of Charles and Catherine Hahn was born June 10 1871 in Black River township, Lorain county, Ohio and died at his home in Berlin township Sunday at the age of 65 years 4 months and 15 days. On August 10 1893 he was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Ludwig. They moved to their present home Oct. 23 of the same year, and it was here they lived for the past 43 years, and reared their family of five sons, all of whom are interested in operating the farms owned by the family. Mr. Hahn has been a member of the Huron Grange for many years. He has served on the Library Board in Berlin Heights since it was started. He was an active member of the K. of P. Lodge of which his five sons are also members. He was also a member of the Congregational Church of Berlin Heights. He is survived by his widow, five sons, and ten grandchildren, a brother and four sisters also survived him."

Magdelene "Mattie" (Myers) Batch (1863 - 1946)


"Mrs. Mattie Batch, 83
Died Friday at her home in Bellefontaine.
She has been ill for the past three weeks and confined to her bed for one day.
Mrs. Batch was born in Toledo April 18, 1863, but spent her girlhood in Maumee(?) where she received her education in the public schools. She was married Nov. 14, 1882, in Toledo, to James Welsh Batch and came with him to Bellefontaine soon after as a bride of 19.
A son, Orra Leon, born to the couple, died in 1888 at the age of four years. The husband and father succumbed almost 50 years ago in April 29, 1896.
The only immediate surviving is a daughter, Lura Batch. The deceased was the last of a family of 10 children.
County Recorder Paul O. Batch and Mrs. Harry W. Eaton, both of Bellefontaine. are a nephew and niece of the deceased through marriage.
Funeral services were held Monday in Bellefontaine with burial following in the cemetery there."

Berlin Heights: March 3 -- Mrs. Lucy D. Hahn, 73, the mother of Mayor Carl Hahn, here, died Sunday morning at her home in Ceylon after an illness of 10 months. Mrs. Hahn was born in Amherst and lived at Ceylon for the past 53 years.
Mrs Hahn was a member of the First Congregational Church, Berlin Heights: the Huron, state and national Grangers; Berlin Temple, Phythian Sisters; Ceylon Ladies Aid Society and the Tuesday Tourist Club.
Surviving are five sons, Mayor Carl Hahn here, and Edward, George, Walter, and Herbert, all of Ceylon; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Miss Edith Ludwig, Lakewood; three brothers, Milton Ludwig, Painesville, and Charles and Walter Ludwig, Elyria. Her husband Lewis died in 1936."

Corporal Miner was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on September 5, 1952. Corporal Miner was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. He left behind his wife, Opal G. Miner, and an unborn son who now bears his name."

Surviving are two sons, George E. of Washington, D.C. and David L. of Amherst: four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her husband, G. Henry Schmitkins, three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
Friends may call at the Garland Funeral Home, Amherst... Services will be in the funeral home Tuesday at 1 p.m with the Rev. Robert W. Sutherland officiating. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.

Miss Lura Batch, 84, 209 west Williams avenue, died Friday at her residence. She had for many years served as secretary of the Bellefontaine Federal Savings and Loan Association until her retirement from that position in 1954.
Born in Bellefontaine March 10, 1889, she was the daughter of J.W. and Mattie Myers Batch.
Surviving is one cousin, Mrs. Harold (Inza) Pettit, Toledo.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, having been confirmed there at the age of 11, and has taught the Belfry class of that church for 40 years. She was active in all of the church bodies, was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's club, and a charter member of the Bellefontaine Chapter, D.A.R., and was a member of the Critique club.
Funeral Services will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran church, with Rev. Robert Seerist in charge. Burial will be in the Bellefontaine cemetery.
Friends may call at the Eicholtz funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

She was born June 1, 1910, in Liberal, the daughter of Charles Young and Carrie Dotson. She was raised in rural Satanta, where she attended school, graduated and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. She also attended Friends University, where she met Frank F. Rowley Sr. They married April 26, 1933, in Moscow, Kan. He preceded her in death, as did a son, Frank Rowley Jr.; her parents; brothers, Chester, Clifford, Ernest and Gale, and a sister, Lavina.
