Merton M. Waters was born in Truxton, N. Y., March 3, 1830 and was the son of Aretus and Caroline Law Waters. He was one of a family of nine brothers and one sister. In Truxton was passed his boyhood and youth until 1852 when he married Elizabeth Beden of Fabius, N.Y., and they made a home in that place. "JOHN H. ROWLEY
~~
Found Dead in His Barn in the Town of Truxton
~~
Truxton, Jan. 29. — Mr. John H. Rowley, a well known and highly respected farmer who resides in this town on the north road near Labrador lake, dropped dead in his barn yesterday. Yesterday morning at about 9:30 o'clock Mr. Rowley went to his barn to do chores. At about 11 o'clock his sister, Mrs. Rebecca Negus, who lives only a short distance from her brother's house went to call upon her brother's family. Passing the barn she saw the door open and going in found her brother on the floor. She went to the house and notified Mrs. Rowley and her two daughters, who went to the barn. Thinking he was in a faint the women tried to get him to the house, but as he weighted over 200 pounds they were unable to carry him. Word was quickly sent to a large party of men who were cutting ice on Labrador lake, and also Drs. Leonard and Dwinelle of Tully. The men arrived very soon and Mr. Rowley was removed to the house. The physicians soon came who found that he had been dead several hours.
It is thought that death was caused by heart disease as he was subject to that difficulty. The funeral arrangements have not as yet been made.
Mr. Rowley was born in the town of Truxton in 1838 and has always reseided here. He has always been engaged in farming and owned several hundred acres of land in the northern part of town. The charming resort, Tinkers Falls, is located upon his farm. In politics he was a Democrat. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. William McKivers of of Apulia; Miss Rowley of Cortland and one son."

Fred Eugene Preston (1868 - 1929)

"FRED E. PRESTON TAKES OWN LIFE
Brake Hill Farmer, 62, Shoots Self in Fit of Despondancy
Found in Woods Near Home...
....Fred Eugene Preston, a farmer, 62 years old, who owned the George Lord farm on Brake Hill, committed suicide by shooting himself yesterday morning in some woods not far from the farm house. It is supposed the deed was committed while in a fit of despondency.
Mr. Preston lived in the farm house with a house keeper, Mrs. Pitteling(sp?), and a daughter, about 16 years old, a hired man, Irving Parker, of Cinncinatus, and another young man about 18 years old. Preston was heard to leave the house about 5 o'clock in the morning, but no one so far as is known, saw him. When he did not appear for the morning chores, search was made for him by the members of his household and others, and shortly before noon his body was found in a piece of woods about an eight of a mild from the house. Chief of police William Harwood, of this village was called, and he first went near the body. He found that the deed had been done, with an old muzzle loading single barrel shot gun...
Mr. Preston's wife died about a year ago, and he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles Selover, of Tully; by one sister, Mrs. Daniel Burns, of Truxton, and by one brother, Oriel Preston, of Truxton.
Little was known of Mr. Preston here. It is said he seemed in good spirits the night before, and had been playing cards at his home.
The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Selover, in Tully, Burial will be made in Fabius."
